Life in Barnstable, Massachusetts: seven villages, two shorelines, and a town that doubles in the summer
A town made of villages
Barnstable is unusual for a Massachusetts town: it is one municipality made of seven villages, each of which still behaves like its own place. Barnstable Village sits on the north side with the county courthouse; Hyannis is the commercial center; and Centerville, Cotuit, Marstons Mills, Osterville and West Barnstable fill in the rest. Ask someone here where they live and you will get the village name, not the town's.
It is also the county seat of Barnstable County, which is why the courthouse, the county offices and a good deal of the Cape's business end up on this stretch of the peninsula rather than further out.
Three of the villages have pages of their own: Cotuit, Hyannis and Osterville.
Two shorelines and the weather they bring
Barnstable has water on both sides — Cape Cod Bay to the north, Nantucket Sound to the south — and the two behave nothing alike. The bay side is cooler, with the marsh and dunes of Sandy Neck running for miles along it. The sound side is warmer and shallower, with beaches like Craigville facing south into the open water.
That is a lot of coastline for one town, and it is why the air here holds its damp long after an inland town has dried out. Spring arrives late and cool, summer runs humid, and autumn stretches on far past where the calendar says it should. The shoulder seasons — that long stretch either side of the summer — are the part locals will tell you they like best.
The summer, and the rest of the year
Barnstable is the largest community on Cape Cod, and in July and August it is a great deal larger still. The Hyannis ferry terminal moves people to Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard all summer, Route 6 backs up on a Friday afternoon, and Route 28 and Route 132 carry the traffic the rest of the time.
Then Labor Day passes and the town quietly hands itself back to the people who live here year-round. Both halves of that are real, and a house here has to work in both of them.
Where we fit in
EcoGeek is family owned and operated, and we work here rather than driving out from somewhere else. Our team understands this environment in a way that companies from out of town do not, and understanding the place is most of the job.
Everything we use is family and pet friendly. That is not a tagline we picked; it is the reason the company is called what it is.
Why it feels like home
A town of seven villages with a courthouse in one of them, a bay on one side and a sound on the other, and a rhythm that changes completely twice a year. It is a good place to live and a genuinely interesting one to work in, and we are glad to be part of it.
